Topik Intermediate Writing 10회

Topik Intermediate Writing 10회

In the future, I want to be self-employed.

앞으로는 나는 자영업 실업자가 되고 싶다.

Many people want to work for companies owned by other people, but I just want to work alone.

많은 사람들은 다른 사람들에 의해 소유된 회사에서 일을 하고 싶어하지만 나는 혼자 일하고 싶다.

The reason I want to be self-employed is because I think I work best when I am in control of everything.

자영업 실업자가 되고 싶은 이유는 내가 모든 것을 관리 하고 있을 때 일을 제일 할 수 있는 것 같기 때문이다.

Also, I think that independent work suits me very well.

그리고 독립적인 일은 나에게 잘 어울리는 것 같다.

For example, I can focus on a task for a long time without getting bored.

이를 테면 한눈 팔지 않고 오랫동안 과업에 주려할 수 있다.

I also really like being able to start and stop work when I feel like it.

나는 원할 때 일을 시작하고 마치는 것을 좋아하기 때문이다.

I don’t like to be limited to working only certain hours a week.

나는 정해진 근무 시간으로만 해정되 있는 것을 싫어한다.

However, working from how is not an easy thing to do.

그런데 집에서 일을 하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다.

If I work from home I will have to do jobs like editing, proofreading, translation etc, which are boring to most people, but interesting to me because I can learn lots of new things.

집에서 일을 한다면 다른 사람들에게는 지루한 일이겠지만 나는 디수의 새로운 것들을 배우는것을 좋아하기 때문에 나에게는 재미있는 일들인 편집, 교정과 번역 같은 일을 해야한다.

These kinds of jobs can earn good money but I just want to make enough to live a comfortable life.

이런 작업들은 돈을 잘 벌 수 있는 작업들이지만 나는 편하게 살 수 있을 정도로 돈을 충분히 벌고 싶다.

To be self-employed you have to work very hard as it isn’t  very stable but I would rather work 12 hours a day for myself than 8 hours for someone else.

자영업은 안정된 직업이 아니기 때문에 작영업 되기위해 열심히 일을 해야하지만 다른 사람을 위해 하루에 8시간씩 일을 하는 것보다 내가 자신을 위해 하루에 12시간씩 일을 하는 것을 낫다.

This dream is not something that can be achieved overnight.

이 꿈은 하룻밤 사이에 성취할 수 있는 일이 아니다.

I will have to work long hours, build connections, and sharpen my skills in order to succeed.

성공하기 위해서 장시간 일을 하고 좋은 단골을 만들고 기술을 갈고 닦아야 한다.

This is the essay in full paragraph form. Please inform me if you found a mistake:

Topik Essay: Intermediate Level 10회

Topik Essay: Intermediate Level 10회

A fire must have lit under my butt because I decided to bust out not only one but TWO essay at the intermediate level. Unsurprisingly, they we full of errors and I needed a lot of help from my Korean tutor, but nonetheless I did it and I’m pretty happy about that. So, I’m now thinking that I will alternate between beginner’s and intermediate level essays and Topik test  videos to give it some balance and for my own sanity as I really like doing things on the intermediate level. So let’s get started:

Topic:

주제: 갖고 싶은 직업이라는 제목로 글을 써 보십시오. 직업명, 하는 일, 그 일을 하려는 이유, 그 일 필요한 조건

(Topic:Write about the kind of job you want. The job name, type of work, the reason you plan on doing it, and the conditions needed to do it.)

This is what I wrote:

In the future I want to be self-employed. Many people want to work at companies owned by other people, but I want to work alone. The reason I want to be self-employed is because I think I work best when I am in control of everything. Also, I think that independent work suits me very well. If you would like, go ahead and try translating it yourself and tune in later to see the corrected version. I will be uploading the video for this to my Youtube channel sometime in the next few days. And remember, if you would like to submit an essay for me to translate in one of my videos you can click the “Submit an Essay” tab on the menu.

Topik 제17회 Reading 34-60 Videos

I actually had a lot of fun making this video. I broke it into six parts so that you wouldn’t have to flip through the entire thing just to find a problem. Each video is also around 10 minutes or shorter. I would have liked them to be a bit shorter but that would mean doing one video per problem which is a bit extreme to me. I found that after doing this video and over paying attention to (wow is that a new verb)…..focusing heavily on(?) the grammar in front of me allowed me to really see Korean for what it is as a language. I know some people like to take the organic approach to a language and just “feel” it out but I’ve found it takes me much longer to get the feeling of what the meaning of a grammar structure is when I could just look it up. Anyway, I hope it is of some benefit to people who are preparing for the Topik in the near future. Even though the test structure has changed a bit, the past exams still offer plenty reading passages that can only benefit a learner!

Topik Essay: Beginner’s Level 10회 Video

Topik Essay: Beginner’s Level 10회 Video

So sorry for the late upload. First my batteries died. Then I forgot to push the record button 3 times while making the video. I kid you not. I was interrupted by a phone call and my dog, lol. I have a new found respect for people who make YouTube videos. I had no idea how much time takes and I’m just recording myself writing.

Anyway this is my first writing video. It is for the Topik Beginner’s level 10회. I wrote each sentence one by one. Then I broke it down into parts and wrote the Korean meaning for each part. Then I wrote out the full sentence with each part in place. Let’s get to it:

The very first thing you have to know when writing is Korean is the sentence (문장) order. In English, it is Subject, Verb, Object. In Korean it is Subject, object verb. I try to always find the verb first and place it at the end of the clause. So if there are multiple clauses, you always have to have the verb or if there is a liking verb and adjective you omit the linking verb and just go straight for the adjective.

I \ really \ like \ to travel.

나는 \ 진짜 \ 좋아한다 \ 여행하는것

나는 여행 하는 것을 진짜 좋아한다.

I \ traveled \ to 3 countries.

나는 \ 여행한 적이 있다 \ 3 개의 나라를

나는 세 개의 나라를 여행한적이 있다.

Last year \ I \ traveled \ to Canada.

작년에\ 나는 \ 여항을 갔다 \ 캐나다로

작년에 캐나다로 여행을 갔다.

When \ I was  \in elementary school, \ we \ traveled \ to Mexico.

때 \ 나는 \ 초등 학교 \ 우리 \ 영행을 다녀온 적이 있다 \ 멕시코로

나는 초등 학교 때 멕시코로 여행을 다녀온 적이 있다.

This year,\  we \ traveled \ to the Bahamas.

올해 \ 우리 가족 \ 여행을 갔다 \ 바하마로

올해 우리 가족은 바하마로 여행을 갔다.

My \ favorite \ place \ is \ the Bahamas.

내가 \ 가장 좋아하는 \ 장소 \ 이다 \ 바하마

내가 가장 좋아하는 장소는 바하마 이다. (note: my tutor said that because Bahama ends in a vowel, you can omit the 이 and just say 다.)

In the Bahamas,\ the weather \ is \ warm \ and \ the sky \ is \ clear.

바하마에는 \ 날씨가 \ 이다 \ 따뜻하다\ 그리고 or 고 \ 하늘이 \ 이다\ 맑다.

바하마에는 날씨가 따뜻하고 하늘이 맑다.

The food \ is \ different \ but \ delicious.

바하마의 음식 \ 이다 \ 색다르다 \ 지만 \ 맛이 있다.

바하마의 음식은 색다르지만 맛이 있다.

We \ stayed at \ a hotel \ near the beach.

우리 가족 \ 숙박 했다 \ 호텔에서 \ 바닷가 근처에 있는

우리 가족은 바닷가 근처에 있는 호텔에서 숙박 했다.

Everyday \ we \ played \ at the beach \ and \ swam.

매일 \ 우리 \ 놀다 \ 바닷가에서 \ ~고 \ 수영을 했다.

우리는 매일 바닷가에서 놀고 수영을 했다.

At night \ we \ ate \ delicious food \ while \ listening to \ music.

밤에는 \ 우리 \ 먹었다 \ 맛이 있는 음식 \ 는 동안 \ 듣다 \ 음악

밤에는 맛있는 음식을 먹는 동안 음악을 들었다.

I \ was able to \ relax \ a lot.

나는 \ 을 수 있었다 \ 쉬다 \ 많이

나는 많이 쉴 수 있었다.

When \ we \ returned \ home,\  I \ was \ in a good \ mood.

때 \ 우리 가족 \ 돌아왔다 \ 집에 \ 나는 \이었다 \ 좋다 \ 기분이

우리는 집에 돌아왔을 때 기분이 좋았다.

So,\ my \ favorite \ place \ is \ the Bahamas.

그래서 \ 내가 \ 가장 좋아하는 \ 장소 \ 이다 \ 바하마

그래서 내가 좋아하는 장소는 바하마다. (note: I omitted the 이 this time).

Here is the writing in paragraph form:

I’m sure you’ve noticed that I have not included any grammar explanations besides little things I never knew like dropping the 이 from 이다 if the previous word ends in a vowel. The reason for this is because while I like grammar a lot, I don’t like overly structured lessons in how to write correct sentences in Korean. At the end of the day, I’ve found that all you can do is learn the basic grammar rules and use trial and error from there. Through reading and repairing for the intermediate Topik, I’ve learned what correct sentences in Korean feel like. If that makes any sense. So once I see a sentence pattern written in Korean, I can replicate it again and build from it.

Hope you found this helpful. If you have any questions or your found mistakes anywhere (were all human) please leave me a comment below and I will address it. Thank you!

Topik Essay: Beginner’s Level 10회

Topik Essay: Beginner’s Level 10회

In order to get better at writing in Korean, I’ve decided to answer all of the previous Topik essay topics starting from the 10th test and working my way up to the current test. I usually write all of my essays in English first and then translate them to Korean. While it can not be translated exactly, I do like to keep as much as possible the same. The reason for this is because there are often many different ways to say the same thing, but I want to be able to say the exact  same thing.

I will first upload my essay written in English, and then through my Youtube channel, I will translate it into Korean. If you would like to try your hand at it, you can translated my English essay into your own Korean words and then tune it to check and see how right you (and I) were. All essays will first be checked by my tutor to ensure correctness. So, without further ado:

주제: 여러분은 여행을 좋아합니까? 특별히 좋아하는 장소가 있습니까? 왜 그 장소를 좋아합니까?

(Topic: Do you like to travel? Is there a special place that you like? Why do you like that place?)

This is what I wrote:

I really like to travel. I have traveled to three countries. Last year I traveled to Canada. When I was in elementary school, I traveled to Mexico. This year we traveled to the Bahamas. My favorite place is the Bahamas. In the Bahamas, the weather is warm and the sky is clear. The food is different but delicious. We stayed at a hotel near the beach. Everyday we played at the beach and swam. At night we ate delicious food while listening to music. I was able to relax a lot. When we returned home, I was in a good mood. So my favorite place is the Bahamas.

I will be uploading a video translating this essay tomorrow May 17th (South Korean time). I will have it up before noon, but if something unexpected happens, it will definitely be posted before the end of the day. Stay tuned!

p.s. If you would like me to translate an essay you have written, just sent it to me via the ‘Submit an Essay‘ tab. All of the topics will move in sequential order (11th, 12th etc) so send me any essay and I will use it.

note: this essay is a fabrication. I actually dislike traveling, despite living abroad.
